It’s a lot of fun, although not without its challenges. Regulating the temperature of a van is one of these challenges.

It’s got a pun in its name, what more do you want? Fantastic’s roof vent is an expensive option, but arguably one of the best on the market!

The vent fan is made with a high-performance rotary fan integrated into the roof window that can be adjusted as required.

Best Roof Vent Fan Buyer’s Guide

Not sure where to start?

Have a read of our buyer’s guide to help you know what to keep an eye out for!

Power

These days, most vent fans will require a power source to open and close the vent and make the fan rotate, of course.

When converting your van, figuring out the amount of power can be challenging as you have to consider all of the components and their requirements.

Thankfully, the vent fan will consume very little power. Be sure to check how many amps they use to help you work this out.

Look out for fans that require low amps, even at higher speeds, to get the best value for power!

Size matters

Most standard vent roof fans come in three sizes: 14 ¼ inches by 14 ¼ inches, 14 x 14 inches, or 13 x 14 inches wide.

If you are looking for a replacement fan or an upgrade, then make sure to pay attention to the dimensions to fit the existing hole.

Those looking to add a roof vent fan for the first time don’t need to pay close attention, but it is still worth knowing the size.

Generally, Maxxfan models require a 14 inch by 14 inch opening for installation.

Easy to install?

Usually, installing a roof vent fan is one of the first steps of a van conversion, and it’s a straightforward process to do.

The first thing to do is consider the fan’s location to maximize its effectiveness and make sure it does not interfere with the rest of your build.

If you are going to open front windows and use the fan for airflow, then it’s best to position the fan near the back of the vehicle to help circulate air in the best way possible as it will circulate the whole length of the van.

You also don’t want your fan to interfere with any additional roof accessories such as solar panels, so opting for the back can be a great idea.

Once you have decided on the location of the fan, you can get to work installing it! The process is a simple one.

Begin by making a fan opening template and marking it out on the roof; you may want help from a professional if you are not the most DIY-savvy.

Mark around the template with tape and a Sharpie to mark each corner before using an electric jigsaw to cut from one corner to the next.

It’s best to take this one line at a time rather than fret about cutting the entire square! Take your time to make sure you do it correctly.

Once you cut the hole and file down the edges, you can weatherproof the area.

Butyl tape between the fan frame and the van followed by lap sealant (you don’t need more than a bead) will help reduce the chance of leaks, especially if you do this on top of the screw heads also!

Screw your fan into the van, and aside from the wiring, you are done! Be sure to test the fan before installing it to avoid all that hard work for a faulty fan!

Added extras

It’s always worth looking out for kits that will offer extras such as tape, which can help when installing the vent.

Vent fans that come with a remote to control or an additional thermostat are also great options. These will allow you to have better control over the temperature of the van at all times.

A warranty will also cover most fans; it’s worth checking how long this is and if it can be extended.

Especially if you are spending a lot of money, you want to make sure you are covered should you be left with a stuffy van or a fan that won’t turn off!

Be sure to check what is listed with the vent fan before you purchase so you can make sure you are getting everything you could want or need in one purchase!

Noise

By its very nature, a fan will make noise, and finding a quiet one can be a challenge, especially if you are staying in the van. No-one wants to be woken up with the sound of a whirring fan, do they?

Opt for fans made with a quiet motor to reduce the level of noise. Be sure to test the fan before installing it to make sure it is not too loud for you or any of your passengers.

It may be worth stretching your budget to invest in a genuinely silent fan if this is an essential factor for you.

How much?

When kitting out your van, the cost of the roof vent is bound to crop up. The price can range dramatically, so be sure to set a clear budget before you begin your search and try to stick to it as much as possible.

It is always worth considering what is important to you when setting your budget to make sure it can accommodate your needs.

Remember that you don’t need to spend a fortune to have a good quality roof vent fan. Our choices cover a vast budget, so even those on the tightest of budgets will be able to pick up a good quality roof vent fan!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is An Electric Heater?

An electric heater is a device that works by converting electrical current into heat.

The heating element in almost all electric heaters is a resistor that works by converting electrical energy into heat energy and then discharging that energy, as heat into the space that it is located in.

Also known as space heaters, electric heaters are used to warm localized areas and small rooms or places in which a more traditional form of heating, such as a fireplace or radiators, cannot be used effectively.
