c head composting toilet review

When it comes to vans, one of the important things to consider is your toilet situation.

Given that vans typically have a smaller space when compared to a tiny home or an RV, it is likely that you will not have a dedicated bathroom.

Given this, you want to ensure that the toilet you have is odor-free and does not take up too much space.

Composting toilets are quickly becoming a popular choice with those that are on the move a lot. This is because you do not have to worry about black water and emptying your septic tank regularly.

Composting toilets are better for the environment, easy to clean, and are low maintenance.

While they are different from your average toilet, they are a great solution if you are planning to stay off-grid for an extended period.

In this article, we will be reviewing the Basic Composting Toilet, created by a brand called C-Head.

We will be looking at its specifications and the company’s values. To make it easier for you to find the information you need, we have included a useful list of its pros and cons.

We hope this article helps you to decide whether this composting toilet is right for you.

Company Background

C-Head is a fairly small company that focuses on creating composting toilets.

All of their toilets are crafted in the USA. In addition to the four composting toilets they have created, they also create custom toilets. This is a game-changer for those who need toilets to fit into small spaces.

They pride themselves on the high quality of their toilets. In addition to this, the C-Head toilets are a competitive and reasonable price. By keeping their marketing costs low, they keep the price of their toilets competitive.

We have split up our review of the C-Head Composting Toilet into useful specification sections so that you can find all of the information you need.

Cost and Design

What is excellent about the C-Head Composting Toilet is that it is a simple design.

It comes in 4 colors – white, teak, red mahogany, and dark mahogany.

Its overall dimensions are:

  • Width – 16 inches
  • Front to back – 20 inches
  • Height – 18 inches

To ensure that there is enough knee room, C-Head recommends that you leave around 16 extra inches at the front of the toilet. There should also be 36 inches above the toilet to allow for sufficient headroom.

In comparison to other models that require space behind the toilet, this composting toilet can be pushed up against the wall so it will take up less space.

The toilet is fairly averaged size and is not too dissimilar to a regular toilet. It is not cumbersome and it is as compact as it can be while still functioning well.

To help the seat stay attached to the top of the toilet when it is lifted, it has a velcro underneath the seat for security. The toilet has stoppers at the bottom to ensure that it stays in place.

In addition to this, the company gives you the option of whether or not to purchase a tie-down kit at an additional cost. The toilet is made out of good quality materials.

The overall cost is reasonable. In comparison to other well known composting toilet brands, it is cheaper. This does not mean that it lacks in quality, however. As explained above, C-Head prides themselves on their affordable products.

This would be a great composting toilet to choose if you are on more of a budget as it is affordable. While composting toilets are generally a little bit more expensive than your standard toilet or toilet with a septic tank, they are worth the investment.

Once you have a composting toilet, the upkeep is minimal, and they are made to last.

The Basic model that we are reviewing is the economy model and although it is simple in its design, it has all of the basics that you will need without the additional costs.

One of the biggest selling points for a composting toilet is the lack of odor. The C-Head basic is no exception.

As the Urine and solid waste is kept separate, this stops the toilet from having a pungent smell. Instead, it smells earthy, like the composting soil that is used in the toilet.

The toilet has an inbuilt vent to help remove odors.

Overall this composting toilet will take getting used to as it is shaped slightly different in comparison to general toilets.

Solids are collected at the back of the toilet and liquid at the front.

However, it has an ergonomic design for extra comfort.

Toilet Cover

What is unique about the C-Head Composting Toilet is that although it has a toilet seat, it comes with a cover on the toilet too.

This cover can be easily removed and replaced when the toilet is in use. This cover helps to keep the odors in.

As with any composting toilet, the solid waste in the composting section needs to be turned after use. While some toilets will do this for you, you have to do this manually.

To do so, you will need to replace the cover, close the lid and place the crank in the hole in the toilet. This will then turn the compost. The crank will need to be removed when the toilet is in use which can become a little fiddly.

The crank is easy to use and turn however, this will need to be done around 10-15 times after use.

Sight Window

At the front of the C-Head toilet, there is a sight window so that you can see the bottle holding the liquid waste.

This is great because it will notify you when your waste needs to be emptied.

Solid Compartment

C-Head gives you a range of options to use this toilet and you can use a wide range of composting materials in the solid waste section, such as sphagnum moss.

However, if you just want to place a waterproof bag into the bucket, you can do so.

As the solids compartment is not attached to the toilet itself, if anything were to go wrong with it, it can be easily replaced.

Ease of Use

The C-Head toilet is easy to use and empty. When you are in a van the last thing you will want is a toilet that takes a long time to clean.

With this model, you simply lift the seat to remove the solid and liquid compartments. They are easily accessible and easy to empty and clean.

Urine Management System

There are a handful of different options that C-Head offers with this compostable toilet in terms of the urine management system.

They state that you can use any type of jug you prefer for liquid waste. The toilet does come with a urine gallon jug at no extra cost.

You also have these 3 options available to purchase at an additional cost:

  • External Urine Diverter
  • P-Tank
  • Bottom Exit Kit

If you are in a more permanent setting, a bottom exit kit or an external urine diverter would be a great option. It means that you will have to empty the liquid tank, less regularly than with a jug.

However, in a van, the best option would be the jug or the P-tank due to limited space. If the toilet is being used frequently, the jug would need to be emptied every few days.

It is worth noting that the company does not state whether or not this toilet comes with a warranty.

Overall, we think that the Basic C-Head Composting Toilet is a great option for you and your van. It is reasonably priced, made from good quality materials, and has a simple design.

There is nothing complicated about this composting toilet and the solid and liquid compartments are easy to replace and clean.
