Moving is expensive, especially moving large objects from A to B.
One specific cause of expense is moving your mattress because of its size and weight.
If you want to cut the cost of moving, you might consider squeezing your mattress into your vehicle and moving it yourself.
With that in mind, today we’re answering the question ‘Can you fit a full size mattress in an SUV?’, so let’s take a look at the answer.
What is a “full size” mattress?
Before we take a look at whether or not you can fit a full size mattress in an SUV, we must define some of the terms.
So what exactly is a full size mattress? In the case of this guide, we are classing a full size mattress as a standard double mattress.
Both “full size” and “double” are terms used interchangeably to mean a mattress that measures 53 x 75 inches. A “full size” mattress is only just over 15 inches wider than a single, or twin, mattress so it is not actually that much bigger, however, a double mattress is designed to accommodate two people in one bed.
That being said, it has become a lot more popular in recent years for a person who sleeps alone to purchase a double mattress as it gives them more room to move about during the night and can give them a more comfortable night’s sleep.
What size is a standard SUV?
Now that we’ve established the size of a “full size” mattress, let’s take a look at SUVs.
SUVs are an incredibly popular type of car, especially in the States. They provide plenty of room for both passengers and storage and give an excellent driving position on the road.
There are lots of different types of SUVs, made by a variety of different manufacturers, however, on a basic level, they will all be very similar.
A standard build SUV will come with seating for 5 people and a healthy size trunk.
SUVs tend to provide more foot room to passengers, and also offer a little more storage in the trunk than other cars.
Now that we’ve established exactly what a “full size” mattress is, and the basic build of an SUV, let’s take a look at whether or not the two are compatible.
Can you fit a full size mattress in an SUV?
In most cases, the answer will be yes. SUVs tend to be a lot bigger than your average car, and full size mattresses are relatively small which means that you can usually fit the mattress within your SUV.
Of course, this will depend on the type of SUV that you own. The majority of SUVs will measure wider than the dimensions of a full size mattress which might lead you to believe that it will be an easy task to fit the mattress in the vehicle.
However, when you take into consideration, all of the seats within the vehicle, whether or not they are collapsible, and if there is a divider between the back seats and the trunk, it does become a lot more difficult.
Luckily, mattresses are not a solid build. Obviously, they are not as flexible as a blanket or a comforter due to the springs that are contained within them, but mattresses do still tend to have a certain degree of flex within them.
This means that even if the internal width of your SUV is limited due to the seats and other internal components, you will still likely be able to fit a mattress within the SUV as it will bend.
For the best fit of a full size mattress within an SUV, you should match the mattress size to the size of the SUV. If you already own an SUV this might not be a good option, however, if you are looking to rent while you move the mattress, this is always an option.
SUVs do come in different sizes depending on the manufacturer, so if you want the mattress to fit comfortably and flat within the back of the SUV you should ensure that you use a larger SUV for the mattress to be able to fit.
Why would you fit a full size mattress in an SUV?
Now that we know that you can fit a full size mattress into an SUV, you might be asking yourself ‘why would I want to fit a full size mattress in an SUV?’.
There are a few different reasons that you may want to fit a mattress in your car, so let’s take a look.
The main reason you might want to fit a mattress in your vehicle is to transport it from A to B. It is common for people to move house, and even more common for friends to help their friends move house, so it is likely that at some point in your life you will find yourself trying to fit a mattress in your vehicle.
The majority of mattresses come vacuum packed when you buy them from a retailer, so you will only really have to fit a full-size mattress in your vehicle if you are buying secondhand or if you are transporting it as you move home.
In both of these cases, you should be able to fit the mattress in any size SUV due to the flex in the mattress. This will allow you to fit it in even if it does not lay flat.
Another reason that you may want to fit a mattress in your SUV is if you are planning to sleep on it. It is common for people to convert vans into campervans, or to simply add a mattress to the back of the van so that they can sleep to break up long journeys.
Some people may want to do the same in the back of their SUV. While it will be a lot tighter, and perhaps more uncomfortable due to the seats being folded down beneath the mattress, if you buy the right size of mattress for your SUV, you should be able to lay it flat in the back of the vehicle so that you can sleep on it.
In short, yes you should be able to fit a full size mattress into most SUVs.
In some cases, you will be able to lay the mattress flat in the back of the vehicle, but if you have a smaller SUV you might have to bend the mattress slightly to be able to transport it.
